Student Life: Class of 2016 Graduates from Holy Name

Fourth Story_Graduation Image

On Friday, May 27, 130 students graduated from St. Columbkille in Parma to become Holy Name’s 99th graduating class. Parma Municipal Court Judge Deanna O’Donnell, a 1983 graduate, delivered the commencement address, while Elizabeth Springer, the Class of 2016 valedictorian, gave the student address. During the ceremony, the Senior Ensemble also sang a beautiful rendition of “10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord).”

All members of the Class of 2016 were recognized as they crossed the altar at St. Columbkille, and received their diplomas. We are proud of each graduate, and pray that the future holds nothing but wonderful experiences and achievements for them. Below you will find the graduates’ names and their plans for next year. Congratulations!

Alumni: Thank You for Joining Us at the 2016 Reunion Weekend

From the Eugene T. Krakowiak Golf Classic, to the Big Creek 5K Run, a fun time was had by all at the 2016 Reunion Weekend.

The three-day celebration began on Thursday, June 9 with the Eugene T. Krakowiak Golf Classic at Pine Hills Golf Club in Hinckley. It was a beautiful day for the 145 golfers to hit the links and enjoy one another’s company. Although the $10,000 Hole-in-One prize was not won, Bill Cheney ’56, Matt Finkler ’99 and Ryan Weber ’98 took first place in the classic itself. After the golfing concluded, Chad Trush ’94 and the Islander Bar & Grille catered a wonderful meal.

Most importantly, more than $13,500 was raised to go toward the Eugene T. Krakowiak Scholarship Fund at Holy Name, ensuring that Mr. K’s legacy continues to live on in the students who benefit from the generosity of so many alumni and friends.

On Friday night, over 100 alumni and friends came together to celebrate the All-School Reunion. Entertainment was provided by Class of 1982 graduate Tina Facca and her band, The Clams, while Coyne Catering took care of the delicious food. Classmates reminisced over class pictures, yearbooks and other memorabilia, and shared their favorite stories from their time as Holy Name students. At the end of the night, the attendees’ attention shifted to the big screen set up in the gym, and everyone cheered on the Cleveland Cavaliers in their game versus the Golden State Warriors.

Bright and early Saturday morning, runners – and walkers – lined up to take part in the Holy Name Big Creek 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk. Brett Fisher ’01 (19:11) and his wife, Dianne (21:32) won the 5K race!

Throughout the day Saturday, members of the Class of 2020 then came to Holy Name to make special tie-dye t-shirts, while also enjoying cornhole games, as well and burgers and hot dogs. The afternoon concluded with a lovely Mass celebrated by Fr. Bob Kraig ’63, the pastor of St. John Neumann Parish in Strongsville.

Summer Projects: Upgrades Made to Campus During Summer Months

While students are on break, projects are underway to update and improve the school’s facilities. In June, all of the parking lots were re-surfaced and re-lined. The circle that connects Layor Drive and Queens Highway, now named Wondolowski Way, was re-surfaced as well.

Bleachers in the Auxiliary Gym, also known as Manning Auditorium, were removed. With the bleachers now cleared out, there is now room for the installation of more comfortable, up-to-date bleacher seating.

Additionally, the maintenance staff has been hard at work putting new mulch in the landscape beds, cleaning out each classroom, and re-doing the gymnasium floors.

For more updates on building improvements, as well as other school news, visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/holynamehs, or follow us on www.twitter.com at @HNGreenwave!

On Thursday, August 18, Holy Name High School held a groundbreaking ceremony for the school’s new turf field and track project.
Holy Name President Terry Kenneally ’67, Principal Shelbrey Blanc ’95, Athletic Director Jack Richardson ’79, Advisory Board Members Scott Opincar ’87 and Matt Gray ’86, and major donor Rich Cicerchi ’65 were the first to break ground on the field. (A picture of this significant moment in Holy Name’s history is attached to this email.) Several other Holy Name alumni, supporters and students were also on-hand for this special event.

Construction on the field began on Monday, August 22. Before FieldTurf can begin the installation of the new surface, trees must be removed and the current grass field playing area must also be excavated and leveled. In just one week’s time, workers have made significant process on this portion of the project.

During Phase I of the ‘Team Up for Turf’ initiative, the synthetic, multi-purpose athletic turf field will be installed. It will be known as Cicerchi Field, thanks to the generous support of Rich Cicerchi ’65. Holy Name expects this first phase to be completed by early November 2016. The school also has plans for a Phase II, which will include the installation of an all-weather track around the turf field.

Holy Name High School is pleased to announce that Tim Carter has been named the head varsity boys’ baseball coach. He takes over for Dennis Markiewicz ’71, who retired at the end of the 2016 season.

Carter is no stranger to the Green Wave baseball program. He was the assistant varsity baseball coach from 1995 to 1996, and was the head varsity coach from 1999 to 2006. He stepped down at the end of the 2006 campaign due to a professional job change.

“I’m very excited to return as the head varsity baseball coach at Holy Name,” said Carter. “I started my own company in October 2015, which now gives me more flexibility, and more time to coach high school baseball. I look forward to working with these young men as we prepare for the 2017 season.”

In addition to his previous coaching experience at Holy Name, Carter also was an assistant coach at Cuyahoga Community College from 1997 to 1998, and has coached in the Brecksville Travel Baseball Organization for the past ten years.

The successes of the six Athletic Hall of Fame inductees were celebrated on September 23 and 25. On Friday night, the honorees were recognized on the football field before the game, and afterwards they helped cheer the team on to a 49-14 victory over Normandy.

Sunday afternoon the focus remained on the five Athletic Hall of Fame inductees, John Malone ’71, Duane Piscura ’67, Coach Pete Pucher, the late Ray Putka ’42 and the late Bill Zowie ’51, as well as the Special Recognition Award winner, Chris Broussard ’86. News 5 Cleveland Anchor Rob Powers ’84 served as the event emcee, and each inductee (or a representative from his family) spoke after receiving his award from the selected presenter. Below are short biographies on each member of the 2016 induction class. Congratulations on your achievements, and thank you for making Holy Name proud.

Coach Pete Pucher: Athletic Award

A graduate of Cathedral Latin High School, Pete Pucher went the extra mile to make significant contributions to the Holy Name community during his time as a coach for the high school. He had a 78% winning percentage over five years, finishing with a 35-10-1 record. In 1970, he was named the West Senate League Coach of the Year. Several of the men he coached earned state-wide honors while at Holy Name, and went on to earn Division I college scholarships. At least one player who played under Pucher went on to the National Football League.

In addition to his coaching duties at Holy Name, Pucher served as a school counselor, the athletic director and head basketball coach. Today, he lives in Florida with his wife, Terrie. The couple has two daughters (Jeanne and Julie), and six grandchildren. Annual Giving: Help Holy Name to ‘Bridge the Gap’

story-3_annual-giving

The school year is off to a great start, with 607 students in grades 9-12 eager to learn from faculty members who are prepared to provide students with an educational experience based on developing the mind, body and spirit – the ‘Triple Threat.’ We are committed to ensuring that each and every student can succeed at Holy Name and attend our school, whatever the financial situation. With Holy Name’s tuition being $9,550, but the actual cost of educating a student at $11,387, we must find a way to fill this additional amount of $1,837 per student so we can continue to provide a high-quality education at a low cost. That is why we are asking you to help us ‘Bridge the Gap,’ and to support the Annual Fund today.

We need the help of our parents, grandparents, alumni, board members, teachers, staff, and friends to ensure that we stay true to our Catholic mission of making education affordable and accessible to all. Your support of the Bridge the Gap Appeal is one way to show your commitment to Catholic education. The Holy Name Annual Fund is the most important source of unrestricted funds to the school’s operation, meaning that it helps us bridge the gap between tuition and the cost of operating the school. By helping us bridge the gap, we are able to reduce the need to increase tuition to an unmanageable level for parents.

Please consider a tax-deductible gift, which will directly impact students and support these initiatives:

  • 21st century classroom technology and infrastructure
  • College readiness and solid academic programs
  • Financial assistance and scholarships
  • Grade level retreats and leadership programs

Your involvement is what matters most, and we are grateful for gifts at all levels. Bridge the Gap gifts are accepted via personal check, credit card, or in stock. You can make your donation online at www.holynamehs.com/donate-to-hn/. If you have any questions, please contact the Advancement Office at 440-886-0300 ext. 104. Thank you for supporting Holy Name!

Featured: Cicerchi Field Nears Late November Completion

turf-8-23-16

Cicerchi Field, which will feature a brand-new synthetic turf playing surface, will be completed by the end of November. In recent days, the turf itself has been installed and now completely covers what used to be a natural grass field.

Workers from FieldTurf and The Vasco Group are now working on the inlay of the end zone letters, yard lines, center logo and other important field markers. Once this is finished, the sand and rubber infill will be added to complete the field project.

Before placing the turf, workers had to excavate the former grass field, tear down trees, level the land, and then spread out several tons of gravel to act as the field’s base.

When the project is completed, Holy Name’s football, girls soccer, boys soccer and lacrosse teams will use the field for practices. Home games for all of these teams, except for varsity football, will also be held at Cicerchi Field. Varsity football will continue to play home games at North Royalton’s Serpentini Chevrolet Stadium.

Although no teams are able to utilize the field just yet, the varsity football team is excited to continue playing in November! The Green Wave will play Perry on Friday, November 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Perry High School. The address is Perry High School Alumni Stadium, One Success Blvd, Perry, OH 44081. Presale tickets will be available at Holy Name until Friday at 3 p.m. in the Athletic Office and Team Shop. Tickets are $8 presale, $9 at the gate.

Student Life: Campus Ministry Visits Cathedral and Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine

In October, Campus Ministry members had several opportunities to grow in their faith, as well as show their support for the sanctity of life.

On October 20, 140 students went to the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in downtown Cleveland for the annual Catholic Schools for Peace & Justice Respect Life Liturgy at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. They came together with students from other high schools in the Diocese of Cleveland to pray and, as the Rev. Andy Turner said in his homily, to become “champions of peace and justice” and to “set the world on fire.”

During the Mass, Avery Revay ’17 had the honor of serving as a Eucharistic Minister. Following the liturgy, Holy Name and the other participating schools marched from the Cathedral to Cleveland’s Public Square for a Respect Life Rally. Junior Marissa Reid spoke on behalf of Holy Name, sharing a story as to why it is always important to choose life.

The next week, members of The Cenacle of Mary traveled to Our Lady of Lourdes National Shrine in Euclid for a day of reflection. Fr. Neil Walters ’77 said Mass, and the students learned more about the 2016 Jubilee Year of Mercy, as well as the Holy Door that has been open at the Shrine since this April.

The group then traveled along Rosary Hill, saying decades of the rosary. They also saw the Stations of the Cross and walked through the meditation labyrinth. Before saying goodbye to the Sisters of the Most Holy Trinity, who maintain and operate the Shrine, Holy Name students had the opportunity to come together and pray the Divine Mercy Novena.

Since 9/11, Col. Dyer has served four tours in the Middle East, with assignments in Afghanistan, Kuwait and Iraq.

Up until his retirement, he proudly wore the Master Parachutist, Parachute Rigger, Air Assault and Army Staff badges.

During his talk, Col. Dyer encouraged students to thank the country’s military veterans, and to also give back to their communities in some way this year. We thank Col. Dyer, as well as his family members, for joining us for a beautiful celebration this morning. May God Bless our veterans, and all citizens, today and every day.
