tferrante

It is with great sadness that the Holy Name High School Community announces the passing of Tony Ferrante, Class of 1949. An obituary with calling hours and funeral information for Mr. Ferrante can be found at http://bit.ly/1R3AEP2.

Mr. Ferrante loved Holy Name, and was a proud alumnus. During his time as a student, he played football, and was a sophomore on the 1946 Holy Name team that played in front of more than 70,000 people during the Charity Game versus Cathedral Latin at Cleveland Municipal Stadium. Although Holy Name lost that game, Mr. Ferrante played a large role in the team’s success the following year, as the Little Davids beat Cathedral Latin, 14-7 in the 1947 Charity Game.

Following his time at Holy Name, Mr. Ferrante attended John Carroll University on a football scholarship. While there, he met his wife, Josephine, and they married between his junior and senior years of college. After graduating from JCU, Mr. Ferrante served in the United States Army’s medical corps stateside, helping wounded Korean War soldiers who returned to the United States for treatment.

His professional career began at Bobbie Brooks Clothing Co., a women’s apparel company, where he managed their distribution and became president of Brooks Transportation. Eventually, he purchased Kaplan Trucking, a business that continues to be owned and operated by the Ferrante family. In addition to Kaplan Trucking, Mr. Ferrante started Horizon Freight System, and over the years acquired Eastern Express, TRX, DD&S Express trucking companies.

A highly successful businessman and devoted family man, Mr. Ferrante will be forever remembered for his generosity to Holy Name High School. Together with his wife Josephine, Mr. Ferrante made significant contributions to the school’s renovated Library Media Center, which is named in honor of him and his wife.

He also was a major supporter of Holy Name’s initiative to renovate all of the science labs, helping to make the Medical Mutual Patton Physics Lab a success and the future Ferrante Chemistry Lab a growing reality. Additionally, Mr. Ferrante’s donation toward removing old windows and installing new ones throughout the school building has led to lower heating costs, and made the school more energy efficient overall.

The legacy of Mr. Ferrante will continue on through the significant improvements he has helped to make to the school building, as well as through the Ferrante Scholarships that are given to well-deserving Holy Name students each year.

Holy Name Principal Shelbrey Blanc ’95 said, “I first met Mr. Ferrante at the Library Media Center dedication in 2012. From the moment I met him, I could tell he had a great love and passion for Holy Name. He was such a nice, generous, and humble man, and I am grateful for all of his support. I will miss him, but know his legacy will live on through the current and future students who will benefit from his generosity.”

Mr. Ferrante is survived by his wife, Josephine, his son David (fiancée Sara Doran), and his daughters, Nanci Westrick (Dave) and Suzanne Ferrante, as well as three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three sisters, and many nieces and nephews.

We ask that the entire Holy Name Community prays for the Ferrante Family, and may we always remember Tony Ferrante as a loyal, compassionate, kind, humble, and giving Namer.

Holy Name will be performing in the Cleveland Theatre Conference’s One-Act Play Competition on Saturday, March 12 at John Carroll University. Their performance is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Our talented actors and actresses will be performing The Actor’s Nightmare by Christopher Durang. It centers around George
Spelling, an accountant that ends up in a theater with no recollection of any rehearsals. Everyone seems to know him, and what is more, the leading man has been in an accident and he has to “go on for him”!

Once you arrive on-campus at JCU, there will be red Cleveland Theatre Conference (CTC) signs pointing the way to the entrance of the One-Act Play Competition.

The cast members are seniors Sarah Durma, Mason Kuhr and Thomas Joyce, juniors Kyle Wadley and Lizzie Groth, and sophomore Kelly Keefe.

The one-act play is directed by Ms. Tina Callari ’81, and the student director/stage manager is junior Claire Leff.

March Match Momentum is Growing – Show Your Support!

The days are flying by as Holy Name students make phone calls for the Annual Fund Phonathon! At the end of week 2, over $10,000 has been pledged or donated, bringing us to one-third of the $30,000 March Match goal!

The March Match momentum is growing, but we still need your help. With a little over three weeks to go until the end of March, now is the time to consider making a gift that will go toward our academic programs, campus ministry retreats, extra-curricular activities, and much more – all while making a difference in the lives of our students.

To donate online, visit www.holynamehs.com/donate-to-hn. Or, mail in your gift to Holy Name High School, Attn. Advancement Office, 6000 Queens Highway, Parma Heights, OH 44130. Your gift, as well as all gifts received by March 31, will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $30,000, thanks to a kind alumnus.

Thank you for your generous, continued support of Holy Name!

Terrence J. Kenneally Named President of Holy Name High School

Terrence (Terry) J. Kenneally, who for the past 18 years has been the Owner/President of Terrence J. Kenneally & Associates in Rocky River, OH, has been named as the President of Holy Name High School.

The announcement was made today by Margaret Lyons, Secretary for Catechetical Formation and Education and Superintendent for the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland. Kenneally will report to Eugene Boyer, Associate Superintendent for Secondary Schools and Newman Campus Ministry.

“It is a privilege and joy, in the name of Bishop Richard G. Lennon, to welcome Terry to assist in the leadership of one of the Bishop’s own schools. Terry joins a long list of those whose love for Holy Name High School led to a key role for its ongoing success,” said Margaret Lyons.

Kenneally has been practicing law for 38 years. He is currently teaching a course in Irish studies at Holy Name. He also writes two articles for the Irish American News, and has written articles for various legal publications as well.

He is a 1967 graduate of Holy Name High School. Kenneally received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Cleveland State University in 1973. He also obtained his Juris Doctorate from the University of Akron in 1978 and his master’s degree in Irish studies from John Carroll University in 2013.

Kenneally was inducted into the Holy Name Hall of Fame in 1979 and is a former member of its Advisory Board. He is Board Certified in Civil Trial Advocacy by the National Board of Trial Advocacy (NBTA) and a Diplomat of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). He has also been recognized for six consecutive years as an Ohio Super Lawyer.

“I have been a Holy Namer since I attended the school,” said Kenneally. My wife and I, and my oldest three children, have all graduated from Holy Name and, hopefully, my two grandsons and two granddaughters will have the same experience.”

Kenneally has been married to his wife, Susan Cejka Kenneally ’67, for 48 years. They have four children, Terry Jr. ’86, Sean ’87, Erin ’89, and Brianne and four grandchildren. He is an active member of St. Martin of Tours Parish in Valley City, where he also serves as a Lector.

Kegler Brown Announces Election of 1985 Holy Name Grad as Managing Director

Kegler Brown Hill + Ritter announced that Christopher J. Weber, a long-time professional responsibility and trial lawyer, has been elected to succeed Michael E. Zatezalo as managing director.

Now one of the largest law firms in the central Ohio region, Kegler Brown established a Cleveland office and grew by more than 30% in Zatezalo’s sixteen-year tenure, a time when many law firms downsized or merged to remain competitive.

“Under Mike’s leadership, we’ve positioned ourselves to evolve alongside the rapidly changing legal industry because of the strategic choices we’ve made,” said Weber. “Our firm continuously innovates and grows in step with our clients’ needs, and our unique firm culture helps us attract more and more opportunities both here and abroad.”

Weber, who began his career as a summer associate with the firm in 1991, has served the firm in numerous leadership positions throughout his career, including most recently as practice management chair, ethics advisor, and as a member of its executive committee. In his role as the firm’s managing director, he will focus primarily on driving workplace culture and growing the firm and its geographic footprint.

“The 25 years Chris has spent with our firm have prepared him exceptionally well to serve as managing director,” said Zatezalo. “He has exceled in previous firm management roles and we’re excited about the leadership he’ll bring to our business, our culture, and, most importantly, our commitment to client service.”

“The firm made an excellent decision in electing Chris,” said Bill Jordan, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer at DSW, Inc. “He has a practical and thoughtful approach to solving legal issues- qualities that will suit him very well as the firm’s managing director.”

In addition to his new responsibilities, Weber, a Litigation Counsel of America fellow and a seasoned trial lawyer, will continue to focus his law practice on assisting clients in professional responsibility and legal ethics issues, and civil litigation matters. The Best Lawyers in America identified Chris as its 2015 “Lawyer of the Year” in Columbus for Professional Malpractice Law and as its 2014 “Lawyer of the Year” in Columbus for Ethics and Professional Responsibility Law.

Weber earned his J.D. from the University of Toledo College of Law in 1992, is a 1989 graduate of John Carroll University and graduated from Holy Name High School in Parma Heights, Ohio, in 1985.

Alumni: Thank You for Joining Us at the 2016 Reunion Weekend

From the Eugene T. Krakowiak Golf Classic, to the Big Creek 5K Run, a fun time was had by all at the 2016 Reunion Weekend.

The three-day celebration began on Thursday, June 9 with the Eugene T. Krakowiak Golf Classic at Pine Hills Golf Club in Hinckley. It was a beautiful day for the 145 golfers to hit the links and enjoy one another’s company. Although the $10,000 Hole-in-One prize was not won, Bill Cheney ’56, Matt Finkler ’99 and Ryan Weber ’98 took first place in the classic itself. After the golfing concluded, Chad Trush ’94 and the Islander Bar & Grille catered a wonderful meal.

Most importantly, more than $13,500 was raised to go toward the Eugene T. Krakowiak Scholarship Fund at Holy Name, ensuring that Mr. K’s legacy continues to live on in the students who benefit from the generosity of so many alumni and friends.

On Friday night, over 100 alumni and friends came together to celebrate the All-School Reunion. Entertainment was provided by Class of 1982 graduate Tina Facca and her band, The Clams, while Coyne Catering took care of the delicious food. Classmates reminisced over class pictures, yearbooks and other memorabilia, and shared their favorite stories from their time as Holy Name students. At the end of the night, the attendees’ attention shifted to the big screen set up in the gym, and everyone cheered on the Cleveland Cavaliers in their game versus the Golden State Warriors.

Bright and early Saturday morning, runners – and walkers – lined up to take part in the Holy Name Big Creek 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk. Brett Fisher ’01 (19:11) and his wife, Dianne (21:32) won the 5K race!

Throughout the day Saturday, members of the Class of 2020 then came to Holy Name to make special tie-dye t-shirts, while also enjoying cornhole games, as well and burgers and hot dogs. The afternoon concluded with a lovely Mass celebrated by Fr. Bob Kraig ’63, the pastor of St. John Neumann Parish in Strongsville.

For pictures from the various celebrations, visit Holy Name’s Facebook page. You do not need to have a Facebook account to see these pictures!

Thank you to all who attended the Reunion Weekend, and made it a success. We are proud of our alumni, and welcome everyone to attend our next event, the 2016 Homecoming Pre-Game Cookout, at 5 p.m. on Friday, September 23, 2016 at North Royalton’s Serpentini Chevrolet Stadium.

Summer Projects: Upgrades Made to Campus During Summer Months

IMG_3930

While students are on break, projects are underway to update and improve the school’s facilities. In June, all of the parking lots were re-surfaced and re-lined. The circle that connects Layor Drive and Queens Highway, now named Wondolowski Way, was re-surfaced as well.

Bleachers in the Auxiliary Gym, also known as Manning Auditorium, were removed. With the bleachers now cleared out, there is now room for the installation of more comfortable, up-to-date bleacher seating.

Additionally, the maintenance staff has been hard at work putting new mulch in the landscape beds, cleaning out each classroom, and re-doing the gymnasium floors.

For more updates on building improvements, as well as other school news, visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/holynamehs, or follow us on www.twitter.com at @HNGreenwave!
