Holy Name is excited to be participating in the first-ever online day of Catholic Giving in Northeast Ohio. The event is called We Give Catholic, and will take place beginning TODAY, Tuesday, November 29, on Giving Tuesday – the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, a national day of giving for non-profits.

We encourage you to look at our web page, which can be found by visiting www.wegivecatholic.org. There you will find more information on the Holy Name Fund, and how your tax-deductible gift provides the sustainable base of support that allows Holy Name to continue providing a faith-centered, college preparatory education.

Follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/holynamehs and Twitter at @HNGreenwave so you can share in the excitement. We look forward to making tomorrow a great day for Catholic giving and for Holy Name!

Featured: #WeGiveCatholic Day Raises $4,805 for Holy Name

Thanks to the generosity of parents, alumni and friends, Holy Name raised $4,805 on #WeGiveCatholic Day, which took place on Tuesday, November 29.

All of Holy Name’s donations will go into the Holy Name Fund, with the gifts going toward student financial aid, technology improvements, co-curricular activity materials and faith-based programming.

Holy Name has participated in this national day of giving before, this was the first time the Diocese of Cleveland’s Catholic Community Foundation promoted participating in a day of online Catholic giving in Northeast Ohio. The Foundation publicized the day throughout the region, helping all participating Catholics schools, churches and non-profits raise $414,199 in just a 24-hour period.

If you were not able to give on #WeGiveCatholic Day, there is still plenty of time to support the Holy Name Fund. Gifts can be made in the following ways:

1. Going online to www.holynamehs.com/donate-to-hn

2. Sending in a check, made payable to Holy Name High School, to the Holy Name High School Advancement Office, 6000 Queens Highway, Parma Heights, OH 44130

3. Providing a matching gift form from your employer

Additionally, alumnus Raymond E. Smiley ’44 is once again serving in a leadership role by offering a $35,000 matching challenge grant. This means that when you support the Holy Name Fund, a contribution of equal value is received and effectively doubles the impact of your gift.

As 2016 comes to an end, please consider making a special gift to the Holy Name Fund. It is our greatest source of unrestricted income that provides an immediate impact on our most precious assets – our students!

If you have any questions about the Holy Name Fund, please call Michele Fusco Scoccola at 440-886-0300 ext. 104.

At the end of the program, which is two days a week for 12 weeks after school, students take away knowledge and experiences that will prepare them for classroom work, as well as their future professions.

2017 Holy Name High School Ski & Snowboard Information

READ CAREFULLY!!!!!!!

Hello Skiers and Boarders!! You have received your 2017 ski card. This is how the card works:

1. The card is your lift ticket! You must have it on you at all times. This is an RFID tag that identifies you within 3 ft. of the lift. It does NOT need to be visible, but it must be on you in your pocket or on a lanyard.

2. This is also what you use when you redeem your four (4) $10 sessions.

3. IF YOU LOSE THIS CARD, IT IS A $25 REPLACEMENT FEE!!!

Starting: Ski Club begins on Thursday, January 5, 2017 (weather permitting).

Ski dates are as follows:

January 5
January 12
January 19
January 26
February 2
February 9

**If we have no school due to weather, we will NOT ski.**

Equipment: You will be bringing your skis, boards and boots to the proper VISITOR LOCKER ROOMS (BOYS TO BOYS, GIRLS TO GIRLS) IN THE NEW GYM HALL. After school, you may change your clothes in those locker rooms and head out to the bus in the front of the school building.

Departure: Load all equipment in the storage bins under the bus. Book bags, etc. may be left on the bus while we ski. THE BUS LEAVES AT 3:00 PM SHARP!!! DON’T MAKE OTHERS WAIT!!

Lockers: Lockers for your shoes require a TOKEN; tokens cost one dollar. Your token is only good to open your locker once. It will cost you another dollar to open your locker a second time. If you share a locker, decide when and where you will meet your locker partner to prevent frustration in waiting for them. Also know your locker number and partner’s first and last name in case of emergency. I believe there is a $10 fee for lost locker keys, so please be careful with it.

Lessons: Have fun skiing and boarding!!! YOU MUST ATTEND YOUR LESSONS!! Listen for times / locations from your instructors before you leave the bus.

Return Trip: Departure at 7:30PM. Don’t make others wait! We will return to Holy Name at approximately 8:15. You will NOT be able to get back into the school, the building will be locked. Have your ride waiting for you in the teachers’ parking lot so the bus can pull around the front of the building. Once again, please do not make others wait for you.

Info: I will communicate through the emails you gave when you signed up online. I will do my best to keep you informed of any changes or cancellations.

************WE WILL ALSO HAVE A REMIND 101. If you are new this year, text the message @04ec46 to the number 81010 to receive messages (PARENTS ARE WELCOME TO JOIN!!).

Physics Students Build Their Own Roller Coasters!

This quarter, our Honors Physics students have been hard at work learning about energy, gravity and centripetal force. To put what they learned into practice, their teacher, Mr. Duncan, had groups build their very own roller coasters! Mr. Duncan gave groups a month to complete the project. Each roller coaster constructed had to have a loop and a turn. They also had to be considered safe and slow.

Last week, Mr. Duncan had the groups give business pitches for their roller coasters, and also had them demonstrate to classmates and other teachers how they would work, based on their formulas and construction.

Student Life: Spirit Week Brings Holy Name Community Together

IMG_7180

A scavenger hunt, an all-school Mass and the ever popular Spirit Games were just some of the highlights from the 2017 Spirit Week festivities.

Spirit Week kicked off on Tuesday, February 21 with College Apparel Day, where students sported their favorite university on t-shirts, hoodies and sweatshirts. The following day was a free Cleveland Sports Dress Down Day, followed by another free Patriotic Dress Down Day on Thursday.

Throughout the week, each class decorated a section of the school’s hallways to promote their class and school spirit. To differentiate between classes, each one had a different class color. The freshmen chose pink; the sophomores chose red; the juniors chose blue; and as is tradition, the seniors were assigned green.

On Friday, February 24, students had no official classes, and were allowed to dress down and wear their ‘class colors.’ The morning began with the freshmen and sophomores participating in presentations delivered by The Diversity Center, while the juniors and seniors learned about preparing for college and campus safety. Students also took part in the all-new scavenger hunt, answering questions about Holy Name’s history and figuring out riddles prepared by the HN Faculty and Staff. Mrs. Kronholz’s homeroom, which includes senior girls, won the scavenger hunt, giving them a free dress down day and donuts!

After the morning’s events, everyone gathered in the Auxiliary Gym for the Spirit Week Mass, which was celebrated by Fr. Damian Ference, the director of human formation and an assistant professor of philosophy at Borromeo Seminary. Fr. Ference is also a 1994 graduate of Holy Name! Thank you, Fr. Ference, for coming back home to Holy Name and for teaching our students about the importance of meaningful friendships in their lives.

The day closed with the much-anticipated Spirit Games. Students participated in Basketball Knockout, Limbo, Tug-of-War, Musical Chairs, Hungry Hungry Hippos, Balloon Relays, and Dodgeball. Each class, as well as the faculty, also performed a Lip Sync, with this year’s theme being ‘Music from the 2000s.’

It was a close finish, but the Class of 2018 came out on top as this year’s Spirit Game winners!

Thanks to student photographer Hailey Lawler ’18 for sharing her photos.
