Holy Name was honored to host Bishop Nelson J. Perez, the new Bishop of Cleveland, on Tuesday, October 17. Bishop Perez celebrated Mass with our students, encouraging them to always remember the following: “Never, never, never underestimate the power of God’s spirit working in you, through you and despite you.” During the Mass, our principal, Mrs. Blanc, presented Bishop Perez with a spiritual bouquet from the entire student body. In the spiritual bouquet, students shared prayers and acts of kindness that they would offer in thanksgiving for Bishop Perez.

After Mass, Bishop Perez received a tour of Holy Name, led by several of our student ambassadors. He joined them for lunch, where he learned more about Holy Name and our school’s rich history and tradition. The students were happy to give Bishop Perez some final gifts, including a Holy Name fleece sweatshirt, and items made with the 3D Printer!

Thank you, Bishop Perez, for visiting Holy Name and sharing your enthusiasm and love for the Church with all of us. We look forward to having you back with us in the future!

Holy Name HS Makes Christmas Visit to Holy Name ES

Each year, Holy Name High School has a giving tree that includes the names of students at Holy Name Elementary School in Cleveland’s Harvard-Broadway neighborhood. HNHS students, families and faculty members select tags from the tree, and buy Christmas presents for HNES’s Kindergarten through 8th grade students.

Last week, several of our senior Campus Ministry members delivered the gifts to HNES. The joy on the children’s faces reminded all that ‘it is in giving that we receive.’ We pray that all Holy Name Elementary School families, as well as our own, have a blessed and peaceful Christmas.

First Semester Extended

Due to Friday’s snow/ice day, Holy Name will extend the second quarter/first semester by one day. When students return to school on Tuesday, January 16, that will be the LAST day of the second quarter/first semester. This means that everyone should still report to first semester classes on Tuesday.

Students must turn in all work on Tuesday, January 16 that was originally due Friday, January 12. This includes homework assignments, speeches, debates, essay, quizzes, art projects, etc.

The third quarter/second semester will now begin on Wednesday, January 17. Homeroom teachers will be passing out hard copies of the students’ second semester class schedules in homeroom on Tuesday so all are prepared for the new semester that will begin on Wednesday.

Senior Second Semester Early Dismissal Information

If a senior is interested in applying for Early Dismissal, she/he MUST attend a MANDATORY meeting on Wednesday, January 17 after homeroom announcements. The meeting will be in the conference room located next to room 120. During that meeting, the Administration will explain the requirements for obtaining Early Dismissal and will also hand out all necessary paperwork.

PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT IF A STUDENT DOES NOT ATTEND THIS INFORMATION MEETING, EARLY DISMISSAL WILL NOT BE AN OPTION.

Please consider the following:

– Only seniors in good academic standing are eligible for Early Dismissal.

– Early Dismissal will be granted for period 8 only. In other words, students may NOT leave the building until the END of 7th period.

– Student-Athletes who are currently in-season are NOT eligible for Early Dismissal. In-season student-athletes would be eligible for Early Dismissal upon the conclusion of their sports season.

– A request form must be submitted for each semester. The request form must be turned in to Mrs. Carter BEFORE Early Dismissal is implemented.

– Seniors with Early Dismissal are to leave the school premises COMPLETELY.

– If students are involved in any after school activities (including detention and/or school clubs), they must report to study hall on those days.

– There may be days when students are not permitted to leave early due to a special schedule. Students will be given ample notice so they may plan for these days.

(Additional details of the Early Dismissal privilege may be found in the Holy Name H.S. student handbook.)

Please see the Administration with any questions.

Seniors Karen Nemeth & Sarah Sparks Earn 2018 Scholastic Art Awards

Holy Name is proud to announce that two students received recognition after submitting artwork to the 2018 Scholastic Art Awards – Cuyahoga County Region Competition. Student artwork pieces from across the county were considered, with 3,325 submissions being reviewed.

Karen Nemeth ’18 received a Gold Key Award (artwork demonstrating the highest levels of achievement in originality, personal voice and technical skill) for her drawing and illustration titled “The Future,” while also receiving a Silver Key Award (artwork demonstrating achievement worthy of recognition at the regional level) for her printmaking piece, “Acceptance.”

Sarah Sparks ’18 earned an Honorable Mention (artwork demonstrating creative potential) for her mixed media piece, “Spiral Garden.”

Both Karen and Sarah were recognized for these achievements at an award ceremony held at the Cleveland Institute of Art on Saturday, January 13. Karen’s artwork is now on display in CIA’s Reinberger Gallery, with Sarah’s artwork being displayed digitally on monitors in the same gallery. Their artwork will be up through Friday, February 2, and gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Thursday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday; and 12 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Karen’s Silver Key Award piece, “Acceptance,” was made during Mrs. Beth Ryan’s College Credit Plus (CCP) Art Foundations class, with her Gold Key Award winning artwork done in last year’s Intermediate Design course. When designing her artwork, Karen is inspired by her daily life struggles. “Artwork helps display emotions and life,” said Karen. “Art comes in many forms, and it is a great way of expressing yourself. I like how universal and versatile it can be.”

Next year, Karen plans to study Studio Art at Kent State University. In the future, she would like to travel and become multilingual.

Sarah’s entry was also created as part of her work in Mrs. Beth Ryan’s CCP Art Foundations course. She grew up with art as a major part of her life, as her mother is a high school art teacher. “I also focus on emotions for art inspiration,” said Sarah. “I like to incorporate shapes and designs from nature into my designs, too.”

After graduation this spring, Sarah plans to study Studio Art, Interior Design or Architecture at The Ohio State University or Kent State University.

The entire Holy Name community congratulates both Karen and Sarah for sharing their talents and creating this beautiful, award-winning artwork!

Earn your place in Holy Name High School history: Help name the NEW Green Wave Mascot!

The Mascot Naming Submission Form is now open, with entries being taken until Friday, March 9 at 11:59 p.m. ET. The form asks for the nominator’s name and email address, and most importantly, what the name of the new Holy Name mascot should be. To access the submission form, visit this page by Friday night.

Once all submissions are in, the Mascot Naming Committee will review all of them and select their top choices (submissions of the same name multiple times will not influence the committee’s decision on whether or not to include them in the top choices).

A separate survey will be sent out at a later date with the top name choices included, and whichever name receives the highest amount of votes in that survey, will be the winner.

Current students, alumni, parents and friends are all invited to participate in the Mascot Naming Contest. The committee looks forward to reviewing the submissions!
