Holy Name is pleased to announce that Conor Regin is the Green Wave’s new boys’ varsity head lacrosse coach. His tenure will begin immediately.

Regin, who is from Syracuse, New York, has been playing, and now coaching, lacrosse his whole life. During his high school career at West Genesee (NY), Regin and the lacrosse team were the 2008 New York state champions. He then went on to play at Onondaga Community College (NY), where he was a part of a team that won the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national championship in both 2010 and 2011. Regin concluded his college career at Le Moyne College (NY), where he won a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II national championship in 2013.

Regin said, “Growing up in Upstate New York, I was forced to be surrounded by the game and grew to love it. I am looking forward to being a part of Holy Name, as well as the 2016 lacrosse team.”

Congratulations to the Varsity Holy Name Football Team, as they have qualified for the Division IV, Regional 11 Playoffs! FEATURED: Building Updates and Improvements

From beautiful new windows to a state-of-the-art, renovated Physics Lab, there are several improvements that have been, or are in the process of being made to the school building this fall!

Over the summer, new windows were installed on the back of the main school building. This completed the overall window project, made possible in large part due to the generous donations from Tony Ferrante ’49 and the Michael Talty and Helen Talty Charitable Trust. Additionally, the roof on the main school building and on several of the auxiliary buildings is being replaced, and should be finished before the winter season arrives.

The renovation of the Physics Lab on the school’s first floor is also well under way! In July, the room was completely gutted and everything from the floor to the chalkboards was removed. Since then, workers have put up new drywall, painted, moved the gas and water lines to the perimeter of the room, installed the cabinetry, and laid the groundwork to make the Physics Lab a functional space for learning and lab work. The lab, which will be named the Medical Mutual/James V. Patton ’47 Physics Lab, is expected to be fully functioning this month!

Additionally, Team Up for Turf, Holy Name’s initiative to build a $1.5 million multi-purpose field and track facility on-campus, continues to move forward. To date, nearly $630,000 has been pledged toward making this project a reality. For more information and to learn how you can support Holy Name’s effort to bring the home field advantage home, visit www.TeamUpforTurf.com.

Spotlight: Five HN Students on Attorney General’s Teen Ambassador Board

Holy Name is well-represented on the 2015-2016 Ohio Attorney General’s Teen Ambassador Board, with five junior and senior students chosen for this honor.

Seniors Andel Krakowiak, Morgan Pitman, and Jack Smith and juniors Anthony Mercuri and Ally Russ were among just 170 students selected state-wide for the Board, which collaborates to advise the Attorney General’s Office on issues related to teens.AG Teen Board 2

The students’ experience on the Teen Ambassador Board began when they went to Columbus in August and met with Attorney General Mike DeWine and his staff. While there, the students were assigned to small groups that address various issues, and focus on developing solutions to combat problems that Ohio teens face daily. Morgan, Jack, Anthony, and Ally are in the drugs and alcohol awareness groups, while Andel is a part of the distracted driving committee.

All of the students have monthly conference calls with their groups, where they discuss the research they have completed and brainstorm ideas on how to make teens more aware of the effects and consequences of underage drinking, drugs, and distracted driving. In March, the students will return to Columbus to present their final projects to senior attorney general’s office officials, with the goal being that these solutions will be implemented or included in a state-wide campaign.

Weekly Art Update: Halloween Fun and Color Wheel Creation

Holy Name’s Art Teachers, Mrs. Beth Ryan and Mr. Dan Humphrey ’09, have been working with their students on a variety of projects this semester. Here is a glimpse into their classrooms this week:

FullSizeRender (1)

In the spirit of the season, art students have been busy incorporating the culture of Halloween into their art lessons. Mrs. Ryan’s classes have been full force finalizing their artwork for the holiday. Basic Design students practiced value studies by enlarging small pieces of a larger picture, focusing on the light and dark values within their “puzzle piece.” After everyone was finished the students worked together to piece their drawings together to discover the larger image. Both classes were very excited and happy with their results! (They even learned a little bit about Boris Karloff, the original Frankenstein). Ceramics students finished glazing their “Sugar Skull” sculptures, just in time for “Dia de los Muertos.” We explored the cultural history behind the Mexican sugar skull designs while incorporating them into unique clay sculptures. Art Club was also busy this week painting pumpkins. Everything turned out awesome and we are so excited to share our hard work with the rest of the student body!

This week, in Mr. Humphrey’s Basic Design class, the students were introduced to and began studying color theory. They were responsible for creating a color wheel as well as a chromatic value scale. Both exercises will aid them in the coming weeks when they dive into deeper projects involving painting and color.

2015-2016 Ski Club Kicks Off on January 7

It’s almost time to ski and snow board with the HN Ski Club! You will ski six times with HN, plus receive a Club Card for four (4) value passes to use on your own. If you have your own equipment, the cost for Ski Club is $215. If you are renting your equipment, the cost is $275. Both costs include transportation.

Take a look at the 2015-2016 Ski Club Flyer for more details.

If students still need to fill out the 2015-2016 Ski Club Info Form, download that required form here.

For you veteran skiers, things are a little different this year. This is how the 2016 ski card will work:

1. The card is your lift ticket! You must have it on you at all times. This is an RFI tag that identifies you within 3 ft. of the lift. It does NOT need to be visible, but it must be on you in your pocket or on a lanyard.
2. This is also what you use when you redeem your four (4) $10 sessions.
3. IF YOU LOSE THIS CARD, IT IS A $25 REPLACEMENT FEE!!!

Dates:

Ski Club begins on Thursday, January 7, 2016 (weather permitting). As of right now, Ski Club will always take place on Thursdays and is from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Ski dates are as follows:
January 7
January 14
January 21
January 28
February 4
February 11

**If we have no school due to weather, we will NOT ski.**

Equipment:

You will be bringing your skis, boards and boots to the proper VISITOR LOCKER ROOMS (BOYS TO BOYS, GIRLS TO GIRLS) IN THE NEW GYM HALL. After school, you may change your clothes in those locker rooms and head out to the bus in the front of the school building.

Departure:

Load all equipment in the storage bins under the bus. Book bags, etc may be left on the bus while we ski. THE BUS LEAVES AT 3:00 PM SHARP!!! DON’T MAKE OTHERS WAIT!!

Bus Trip:

Throw all garbage in trash bag – keep the bus clean. Talk quietly… Stay in your seat. This is a school function; all school rules will be enforced!

Lockers:

Lockers for your shoes require a TOKEN; tokens cost one dollar. Your token is only good to open your locker once. It will cost you another dollar to open your locker a second time. If you share a locker, decide when and where you will meet your locker partner to prevent frustration in waiting for them. Also know your locker number and partner’s first and last name in case of emergency. I believe there is a $10 fee for lost locker keys, so please be careful with it.

Lessons:

Have fun skiing and boarding!!! YOU MUST ATTEND YOUR LESSONS!! Listen for times / locations from your instructors before you leave the bus. There are lesson levels for everyone from beginners to expert extreme.

Return Trip:

Departure at 7:30 p.m. Don’t make others wait! We will return to Holy Name at approximately 8:15. You will NOT be able to get back into the school, the building will be locked. Have your ride waiting for you in the teachers’ parking lot so the bus can pull around the front of the building. Once again, please do not make others wait for you.

Email:

I will communicate through the emails you gave when you signed up online. I will do my best to keep you informed of any changes or cancellations. WE WILL ALSO HAVE A REMIND 101. If you have any questions, contact me, Mrs. Rini, in Room 213 or email her at ginarini@holynamehs.com.

Featured: National Honor Society Inducts 46 New Members

On Friday, November 20, 46 students were inducted into Holy Name’s chapter of the National Honor Society. This year’s ceremony theme was ‘On Top of the World,’ and celebrated the NHS members’ success in the classroom and beyond.

Current NHS members led the ceremony, and also received their official NHS pins and cards. These senior students then shared their thoughts and insights on the importance of knowledge, as well as the four cornerstones of the National Honor Society: scholarship, character, service, and leadership.

After the NHS Ensemble sang “On Top of the World” by Imagine Dragons, new members were presented and received their certificates. Principal Shelbrey Blanc ’95 concluded the special ceremony, congratulating the NHS members on their achievements. She also pointed out that all Holy Name students have reasons to be on top of the world, and encouraged everyone “to be thankful for the gifts, talents, family members, and friends God has given you… and to determine ways you can help others to join you on top of the world. Make the difference. Be the difference.”

Highlights of the season included senior Marty Wallace’s field goal in overtime to beat rival Padua Franciscan, 13-10, and the team’s 14-10 regular season finale victory over Rocky River, which earned the Namers a share of the inaugural Great Lakes Conference title. Most importantly, the win over River secured a Division IV, Region 11 playoff berth, the first for Holy Name football since 2005.

After receiving the seventh seed in the playoffs, the Namers were matched up against #2 seed Perry, a team that was 8-1 in the regular season and finished eighth in the Division IV AP Ohio High School Football Poll. In an exciting upset at Perry’s home field, the Green Wave beat the Pirates, 50-43, earning Holy Name’s first playoff victory since the 1975 state championship win.

The exciting playoff run for Holy Name ended in the second round, as the Namers fell to Mantua Crestwood, 40-26. The team finished the year with an impressive 8-4 record overall. Linebacker Colin Costanzo ’17 was named to the Associated Press Northeast Ohio Lakes All-District Division IV first team, while lineman Tyler Poff ’17 was selected for the second team.

Volleyball

Moving into the Great Lakes Conference did not hinder the Holy Name girls’ volleyball team, as they finished conference play undefeated to secure the GLC crown outright. The team also beat perennial power Magnificat, as well as rival Padua Franciscan, during the regular season.

Volleyball finished their year after falling to Padua in a Division II district title game. Along with the team winning the GLC championship, head coach Marty Marflak was named the conference’s coach of the year. Senior captain Kailee Cunningham was the GLC MVP, while Cunningham and senior co-captain Jordyn Kachmar were named to the GLC first team. Senior co-captain Maddy Adams was joined by senior Carly Stepic on the GLC second team. Junior Hannah Verba and freshman McKenna Keir received GLC honorable mentions.

Additionally, Cunningham was named an all-district first team selection, an all-Ohio third team selection, and as the team’s Namer Award recipient. Kachmar was named an all-district honorable mention, and was selected as the team’s MVP. Verba earned the team’s Most Improved Player award.

Girls Soccer

Playing one of the toughest schedules in the state, including games against the eventual Division I (Walsh Jesuit) and Division II (Archbishop Hoban) state champions, paid off for the Lady Namers this season. The girls beat Buckeye, Bay, and Rocky River in the district bracket to win a Division II District Title for the second straight year.

Their season concluded after falling to Ontario, 2-1, in a hard fought regional semifinal game. Senior co-captain Lizzy Springer was named as the team’s MVP, while senior co-captain Ashley Rings received the team’s Namer Award.

Boys Soccer

Boys soccer won four of their last five regular season games, including a solid, 3-0 senior night win over Benedictine. The boys then went on to upset Lodi Cloverleaf in the first round of the Division II playoffs, beating them 2-1 after a last-second goal by Jake Rosko ’17 at the end of regulation.

The team concluded the season with a loss against Rocky River in the district tournament. Senior co-captain Ryan Ontko finished his Holy Name career as the Green Wave’s all-time leading scorer.

Cross Country

The girls’ and boys’ cross country teams each had their best seasons in recent history. Both teams repeated as the Beachwood Bison Meet champions, and both placed fourth at the new Great Lakes Conference Championship Meet. The boys’ team was led by junior Shawn Slivka, who qualified for the Division II Tiffin Regional and had ten top 20 finishes during the season. The Lady Namers were led by junior Laura Kolenz, who also qualified for the Division II Tiffin Regional and had nine top ten finishes.

Both Slivka and Kolenz were named as their respective team’s MVP. Seniors Ryan Madden and Kat Kinnen were selected as the Namer Award recipients.

All other awards not announced here will be posted once available. Thank you to all fall sports teams for a terrific season! Please come support the winter athletes, including those participating in boys basketball, girls basketball, bowling, gymnastics, hockey, and wrestling, as they begin their seasons this month!

After months of anticipation, Holy Name High School dedicated the brand-new Medical Mutual Patton Physics Lab this past Thursday, December 3. The lab, which is now being used by Mr. Alan Duncan’s Physics and Honors Physics classes, is named in honor of the late James V. Patton. Mr. Patton was both a 1947 graduate of Holy Name and a long-time executive at Medical Mutual. He loved his time as a Holy Name student, and often shared his fond memories with his family members, friends, and colleagues. Because of this, the Holy Name community feels privileged to now have a Physics Lab that will allow Mr. Patton’s legacy to continue on for years to come.

Several people made the complete renovation of the physics lab possible, including Medical Mutual, Mr. Tony ’49 and Mrs. Josephine Ferrante, Mr. Ray ’44 and Mrs. Eleanor Smiley, and the estate of the late Ms. Geraldine Kempski ’49. Without their generosity, the Medical Mutual Patton Physics Lab would not be a reality, and the Holy Name community is grateful for their continued support.

Westlake Reed Leskosky worked with Holy Name to conceptualize and design the Physics Lab, while A.M. Higley Co. handled the construction and renovation of the lab. The existing room was completely gutted over the summer, with everything from the floor and the ceiling tiles, to the furniture and chalkboards, removed. Workers then installed drywall and cabinetry, and put in a tile floor and windows.

They also created an exposed ceiling, and moved both the water and gas line outputs from the middle of the room, to the perimeter, so the lab could be more open and unrestricted. Lab work stations are now located on either side of the room, allowing Mr. Duncan to supervise and work with the students more easily. Additionally, there are rolling tables and chairs in the lab, making it user-friendly and giving the students mobility and the ability to conduct experiments throughout the lab.

At the evening celebration on December 3, Holy Name Principal Shelbrey Blanc welcomed and thanked all in attendance, especially Mr. Patton’s wife, Ursula, and his children and grandchildren. She also read a blessing written by the Rev. John Carlin, Pastor at St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Parma. Ms. Debra Green, the director of community outreach at Medical Mutual, and Mr. Jim Patton, the late Mr. Patton’s son, also said a few words to commemorate the special evening.

After the blessing and ceremonial ribbon cutting, attendees were able to walk around the Medical Mutual Patton Physics Lab, speak with students, conduct fun physics experiments, and learn more about Holy Name’s new STEAM Club, which encompasses science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Additionally, it was announced that Holy Name will continue to work on improving its other science labs, with the chemistry lab slated next for renovation.
