Our Commitment to Equity, Inclusion, and a More Just Community

Hello Holy Name High School Families,

In the wake of the injustice and the death of George Floyd, Holy Name High School stands in solidarity with all families, past and present, both locally and nationally, who have experienced such hatred and loss.

We educate young men and women to proclaim the Gospel, live Christ-like lives, and accept and respect every dimension of diversity. Through this process of becoming responsible and caring citizens of our local and global community, our students discover their potential and value with each other.

We acknowledge that racism and prejudice is not only a historical pandemic, but is also alive and prevalent today. Holy Name vows to never turn a blind eye to defamation, and promises to cultivate within its students, faculty, administration, staff, and coaches an admiration for a diverse community who can work together toward inclusion and equality.

Holy Name prays that the global community finds courage and strength to move beyond just hopes and dreams, as well as unified fortitude to work with others to make justice and equality a reality for all people.

Please pray with us as a community the Prayer for Solidarity from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops:

Almighty and ever-living God,
empower your one human family to join hands
on our journey of faith.
Send us your spirit of hope,
so that we may work
to alleviate human suffering
and foster charity and justice
in our world.

Mrs. Shelbrey Blanc, Principal
Mr. Jason J. Reed, Director of Diversity and Inclusion
Mrs. Karen Carter, Assistant Principal
Mr. Michael Sullivan, Assistant Principal

2020 Holy Name Grad 96

On Friday, July 17, members of the Class of 2020 celebrated Mass on campus one last time as Holy Name students. Fr. James Kulway, parochial vicar at Mary Queen of the Apostles Parish in Brook Park, was the celebrant. Fr. James also celebrated the very first Mass many members of the Class of 2020 attended in August 2016, at their Freshman Class Picnic.

“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” – Written by A.A. Milne, for Winnie the Pooh.

Class of 2020, we have been lucky to have you at Holy Name these last four years. You persevered in both good times and bad times. You showed the underclassmen how to lead, how to serve, and how to treat others with respect. You made this school – this community – a better place. Saying goodbye to you is not easy. But please know that all of us are very proud of you, and feel lucky to call you Namers for life.

Karen L. Carter, the assistant principal for academics at Holy Name High School in Parma Heights, Ohio has been elevated to the position of principal of the school, replacing Shelbrey L. Blanc, who was named school president last April. The promotion of Carter to principal was announced by Frank O’Linn, Ed.D., secretary for education and superintendent of schools for the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, which owns and operates Holy Name High School.

Carter has been employed at Holy Name for 28 years and has served in a variety of roles including social studies teacher, head volleyball coach, assistant athletic director, guidance counselor, associate director of admissions, advanced placement and College Credit Plus coordinator, and assistant principal of academics.

“Serving professionally in these numerous positions has provided me with the unique opportunity of interacting with students and their families as well as faculty and staff in so many different ways,” said Carter. “I am excited to have been selected as principal and to use my many years of education and administrative experience in this role, serving the needs of students, parents and the entire Holy Name High School community.”

“I am pleased that Mrs. Carter has been selected as our new principal and look forward to working with her in her new role,” said Blanc. “She brings a depth of experience to the position of principal which touches upon all aspects of academics including hiring of teachers, faculty evaluation, planning professional development, and improving curriculum. Mrs. Carter is passionate about secondary education and embraces the rich history and tradition of Holy Name High School.”

Carter is a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. In 1989, she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. In 1991, she received her Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary Education – Comprehensive Social Studies, with a minor in social work.

“Over the years, Mrs. Carter has proven herself to be an exceptional educator and steadfast leader who has engaged in a broad range of important roles helping students grow and prepare for their life’s journey,” said Dr. O’Linn. “I know Mrs. Carter will use her vast experience and exceptional skills to ensure the future growth and great success of Holy Name High School.”

Located in Parma Heights Ohio, Holy Name High School traces its roots to September 1914 when the school first opened its doors as a four-year secondary, co-educational, Catholic high school. The mission of Holy Name is simple and clear: To lead young adults to Christ by educating them in mind, body, and spirit.

Current Families to Utilize FinalForms During 2020-21 School Year

$

0

Holy Name is excited to announce that beginning with the 2020-2021 school year, we will be utilizing FinalForms, an online forms and data management service. FinalForms will replace the paper forms you typically fill out at the start of the school year.

You will soon receive, if you have not already, an account confirmation email from FinalForms (Those families with fall student-athletes likely received this confirmation email previously. We ask that you please login in again to make sure all additional forms and added fields are filled in correctly). Please click the link provided in the account confirmation email and follow the steps to login and access your student(s). You can also utilize the Parent Playbook, which can be found by visiting www.holynamehs.com/finalforms, to help you get started. If you require any support during the process, scroll to the bottom of the FinalForms page and click “Use Support.”

All families will be required to use FinalForms, as it allows you to complete and sign enrollment, back-to-school and athletic participation forms for your students. The best news is that FinalForms saves data from season-to-season and year-to-year, meaning that you will never need to enter the same information twice! We ask all families to please fill out everything in FinalForms by Thursday, August 27.

This online system also pre-populates information wherever possible, for each of your students, saving you time. You may review your data at any time to verify it is current. You, as well as your student when applicable, will be required to sign forms once per year and after any update.

The only start-of-school-year documents that will not be available in FinalForms are the On-Campus Medication Permission Forms (ex. Inhaler Use, EpiPens, etc.) and the Parking Pass Application Form. To obtain those, please come to the Holy Name Main Office between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Or, you may call 440-886-0300 ext. 120 for more information.

Again, please fill out everything in FinalForms by Thursday, August 27. Additionally, and most importantly, no student will be permitted to enter the building on his/her orientation day if any information needed in FinalForms is missing. This is for the safety and well-being of all students and faculty members.

If you have any questions in regards to FinalForms, please do not hesitate to reach out to:

Mrs. Vicki Kerner (vkerner@holynamehs.com or 440-886-0300 ext. 103)
Mrs. Debbie Fiorilli (dfiorilli@holynamehs.com or 440-886-0300 ext. 133)
Mrs. Kris Mulac (kmulac@holynamehs.com or 440-886-0300 ext. 120)

Holy Name is very proud of Jordon Lebron ’22, who was chosen as a winner of The Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio’s 2020 Class of LeadDIVERSITY Promote Change contest. Jordon’s winning essay addressed how he can promote diversity and inclusion in his community, which includes Holy Name. As a winner, he received a $1,000 cash prize and will be recognized at the Diversity Center’s Humanitarian Dinner in November. Additionally, due to his efforts, Holy Name won a leadership program delivered by The Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio.

In his essay, Jordon proposed implementing a Lunch and Learn Diversity program. At this event, community members – in the school, from the business community, etc. – would come together to learn about the different cultures that exist in their respective neighborhoods and schools. Jordon said, “I strongly feel the program can create a pathway for individuals to open up to and understand any current issues, challenges, and community concerns regarding equity and inclusion that various people encounter every day. Sparking thought and open communication can allow ideas to flow and creates an opportunity to implement change.”

Holy Name Community Joins Together to Perform “10,000 Reasons”

One of our favorite songs to sing as a Holy Name High School community is, without a doubt, “10,000 Reasons.” When the song begins during an all-school Mass, the whole gym comes alive with enthusiasm and joy!

As summer comes to an end and a new school year begins, let this continue to be our anthem. “Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me, let me be singing when the evening comes.” No matter what, let’s remind each other that God is good, He loves each one of us, and He will be with us throughout the upcoming year and beyond. “For all Your goodness, I will keep on singing – 10,000 reasons for my heart to find.”

Special thanks to junior Kiersten Hopko, the entire Music Ministry (especially the Class of 2020), and all of the faculty and staff who participated in this video project during our time of virtual learning last spring!
