2019 Gala Auction: $1,500 Tuition Raffle Returns – Purchase a Gift Today!

$

0

The 2019 Gala Auction Committee needs your help with the Cocktails on the Green: Rising Tide Gala Auction that will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2019 in the Main Gym.

This event is the largest fundraising initiative for our students. Last year, the Gala Auction raised $171,000, with a significant portion of the proceeds going toward purchasing furniture for all the math and theology classrooms, as well as the art room. This year, the goal is to raise enough funds to complete more classrooms until the entire school has been updated.

How can you help us achieve the goal? Right now, we are in need of gifts for the Gala Auction, specifically the Silent Auction. If you are already in Christmas mode and will be making purchases online during the Cyber Monday and holiday shopping frenzy, please consider buying a gift for the Gala Auction off of the 2019 Wish List on Amazon at http://a.co/1tplgau! We are also appreciative of receiving Amazon gift cards to build our silent auction baskets.

Keep in mind that if you donate a $100 gift card, cash or a gift valued at $100 or more, you will be entered into a raffle for the chance to receive $1,500 off tuition for the 2019-2020 school year.

Gifts can be dropped off at any time. If you can only drop off gifts on weekends, a special ‘Holly Holy Name Gift Day’ will be held on Saturday, December 8 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., by the Team Shop in the school’s Main Foyer.

As an added incentive, parents/guardians who drop off gifts valued at $100 or more between now and December 8 will have their names entered TWICE into the $1,500 Tuition Credit Raffle. Your name will be entered twice for each $100 donation made.

The winner will be drawn at the March 30 Gala Auction.

Thank you for your support of this very important event! If you have any questions, or would like to know how else you can support the 2019 Gala Auction, please contact Director of Alumni Relations and Special Events Colleen Corrigan Day ’88 at 440-886-0300 ext. 136 or at cday@holynamehs.com.

That squad also was crowned the NCL Champions; achieved a 23-game winning streak; was ranked #1 in The Plain Dealer Girls Basketball Poll; and won a Class AAA District Championship. In the spring of 1972, his abilities on the baseball diamond earned him recognition on The Plain Dealer Dream Team.

Athlete: Dave Woytek Jr. ’87
Sports: Track and Football
Athletic Accomplishments: A four-year track letter winner who led the team in total points all four years, Woytek set numerous school records in a variety of events. He set the 100 and 200 meter dash records, both of which stood for 17 years. He also set and re-set the long jump record that stood for 11 years; was a member of the 4×100 meter relay team that set the school record six different times; and was a part of the sprint medley relay team whose record remained intact for 26 years. The boys track team won the North Coast League Championships in 1986, the same year Woytek earned the NCL MVP Award. He also lettered twice in football.

Athlete: Brian Giovinazzi ’98
Sports: Soccer and Basketball
Athletic Accomplishments: A four-year starter who earned four varsity letters, Giovinazzi left his mark on the boys soccer program. During his senior team MVP campaign in 1997, he served as a co-captain, netting 18 goals and 11 assists. That same year, he was an All-North Coast League, All-Greater Cleveland Second Team and Sun Post All-District selection. On the basketball court, Giovinazzi earned two varsity letters and was a captain his senior year. He finished his basketball career with All-NCL honors.

Athlete: Meghan Patton Crooks ’03
Sports: Soccer, Track and Basketball
Athletic Accomplishments: As the 2003 Holy Name Female Athlete of the Year, Patton earned ten varsity letters in soccer, track and basketball. The two-time captain earned the basketball team’s MVP distinction twice. She was also named All-North Coast League two times during her time as a Namer. Several scholarship and financial aid opportunities are available for current students and families to learn about and apply for use during the 2019-2020 School Year.

The scholarships are broken down into four main groups: Holy Name-specific scholarships; the Cleveland Scholarship Program; need-based financial aid; and additional outside scholarships. Please read more about how to apply for these scholarships, and the deadlines associated with each, below.

Holy Name-Specific Scholarships: Hard copies of the scholarship application forms will be available during lunch periods on Thursday, February 7 and Friday, February 8. They will also be available in the Advancement Office throughout the month of February. Online versions can be found at https://www.holynamehs.com/holy-name-high-school-tuition/. Some of the scholarships are grade-level specific, while others are for all students to apply for. Please pay attention to the criteria.

The deadline for Holy Name-specific scholarships to be turned in to Holy Name is Thursday, March 21, 2019. If you have any questions, please contact Miss Kate McCall at kmccall@holynamehs.com, or at 440-886-0300 ext. 148.

Cleveland Scholarship Program: All students who reside in the city of Cleveland are eligible to apply for this $6,000 scholarship. An application must be submitted each year for renewal, and the paperwork can be found at https://www.holynamehs.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/CSPRenewalForm.pdf. If your student does not currently receive the Cleveland Scholarship, the Request Form must be completed, and can be found at https://www.holynamehs.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/CSPRequestForm.pdf.

The deadline for applications to be turned into Holy Name so they can be properly submitted to the Ohio Department of Education is early April 2019. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Trace Althoff at talthoff@holynamehs.com, or at 440-886-0300 ext. 100.

Need-Based Financial Aid: Holy Name partners with FACTS to handle all aspects of the financial aid application and verification process. In order to be considered for need-based financial aid from Holy Name and the Diocese of Cleveland, you must fill out the FACTS form. Go to https://www.holynamehs.com/holy-name-high-school-financial-aid/ to find the FACTS website, where you can register, sign-in and fill out the online application. The application will be finalized only after your 2018 tax return information has been submitted. Please note that no hard copy forms are available from FACTS this year; it all must be done online.

The deadline to submit your FACTS application is early April 2019. Please be aware that if you received financial aid from Holy Name during the 2018-2019 school year, it will not be renewed unless you complete the FACTS financial aid form now. If you have any questions about the FACTS Financial Aid Form, contact the Finance Office at 440-886-0300 ext. 124.

Outside Holy Name Scholarships: There are also several scholarships outside of Holy Name that you are invited to consider.

John P. Patton Memorial Scholarship – This full-tuition scholarship is open to current juniors and sophomores applicants who are children or grandchildren of current US military personnel or US veterans, and who are involved in school life and consistently demonstrate positive character traits. The student must also demonstrate financial need by completing the FACTS financial aid application; achieve a 3.0 or higher GPA; and complete a one-page essay. This scholarship would be applied to next year’s tuition. If you meet these criteria and would like to apply, applications are available in the main office or with Mrs. Blanc. All completed applications must be returned to Mrs. Blanc by MARCH 1, 2019.

Road Work on Queens Hwy. and Layor Dr. May Cause Delays; Please Be Cautious

$
0
0

When traveling to Holy Name to start school next week, you will notice construction on Snow Road, as well as on Layor Drive and Queens Highway. This is because the Columbia Gas Company is putting in new gas lines for the residents that live in the neighborhoods surrounding Holy Name. The project began several weeks ago and continues in full force as of today, Wednesday, August 14.

Mrs. Blanc spoke with the project foreman today, and he told her that construction on Layor Drive should be completed on Monday, August 19 – the day before school begins for freshmen. However, he anticipates that construction on Queens Highway will continue until the week of August 26.

With this in mind, we ask that all parent and student drivers exercise extreme caution when coming to and leaving school. Workers, as well as a lot of equipment, will be on the roadway. Going slow is always the best option in this situation. Do not try to quickly maneuver around workers; take your time.

Additionally, we share this construction news so that everyone is aware of possible delays on both main roads and side streets near Holy Name. Please give yourself extra time to get to school each morning so you arrive on-time.

We also remind everyone that during school days, Layor Drive and Queens Highway are one-way streets until 3 p.m., Monday – Friday. When coming to Holy Name, please enter via Layor Drive ONLY. When leaving, please exit via Queens Highway ONLY. This is in effect all school days, not just during construction periods.

Holy Name is honored to announce that seniors Kate Reardon and Matthew Stracensky have both been named semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit® Scholarship Program!

Over 1.5 million juniors in 21,000 high schools entered the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program after taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) last October. Of those 1.5 million, only 16,000 are recognized as semifinalists, representing the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

Kate attended St. Albert the Great School in North Royalton. She is currently ranked second academically in the class of 2020. Outside of the classroom, Kate participates in cross country and track; is a student government class officer and Eucharistic Minister; and is a member of Campus Ministry, Cenacle of Mary, and the Health and Medical Careers Club. She remains active at St. Albert the Great as an altar server and as a scorekeeper at CYO games, while also working at Mitchell’s Homemade Ice Cream. After Holy Name, Kate plans to study biomedical engineering at the University of Cincinnati, The Ohio State University or Purdue University.

Matthew attended St. Ambrose School in Brunswick. He is ranked first academically in the senior class. Matthew has performed in several Holy Name fall plays, spring musicals and one act performances. When he is not on the stage, Matthew is involved with STEAM Club; PenOhio; Drama Club; Campus Ministry; Music Ministry; and the Health and Medical Careers Club. Although he is a Eucharistic Minister at Holy Name, he is also an altar server and choir member at St. Ambrose. Additionally, Matthew is working toward earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Next fall, he plans to study aerospace engineering at Case Western Reserve University, The Ohio State University or Purdue University.

As semifinalists, Kate and Matthew have the opportunity to continue in the competition for nearly 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million.

Thank you to all who joined us on Monday, September 23 to bless and dedicate the brand-new Ray ’44 and Eleanor Smiley Family Chemistry Lab at Holy Name! We were especially lucky to have Mr. Smiley, many other generous benefactors and alumni, and Diocese of Cleveland Bishop the Most Rev. Nelson J. Perez, with us for the celebration.

Along with seeing the brand-new chemistry lab, attendees witnessed the unveiling of the ‘Our Stories Began Here’ Alumni Wall, featuring 21 alumni who have been successful in various walks of life. Guests were also able to learn more about Holy Name’s new Anatomage Table, a seven-foot, interactive anatomy table that will be used in biology, forensics, anatomy and physiology, and health classes. The table was made possible due to a partial grant from The Lubrizol Foundation.
