Holy Name High School mourns the passing of a beloved alumnae, Hall of Fame member, and former employee, Margaret (Marge) Schulte McCarthy ’53.
Mrs. McCarthy served the students and the school as an office assistant, assistant treasurer, treasurer and business manager from the mid 1970s through the late 1990s. She also assisted Fr. Krizner in campus ministry and worked with Mrs. Kris Mulac to feed thousands of Namers dinner at the many retreats held at Holy Name.
Because of her commitment to volunteerism and unwavering love for Holy Name, Mrs. McCarthy was a recipient of the Mother Elizabeth Ann Seton Award, given to an outstanding female alumna who significantly contributed to the advancements of Holy Name’s mission and development.
During her high school years at Holy Name, Mrs. McCarthy was a member of the Glee Club, participated in both basketball and volleyball intramurals, and was in the band. Both she and her late husband, Dick, were members of the Holy Name class of 1953. Together, they raised three amazing children, Patrice ’74, Jim ’75 (married to classmate Debbie Maschek ’75) and Bryan ’80 (married to classmate Ann Mackall ’80). Mrs. McCarthy’s love for her family was unrivaled, and she set an example for all who saw how dedicated and loving she was to every single family member. If one of her grandchildren had a game, concert or activity happening, she was there, regardless of the location. She loved attending events at Holy Name, and took great pride in cheering on three of her grandsons – Rich ’94, Sean ’98 and Tommy ’09 – who played football, basketball and baseball for the Green Wave.
Mrs. McCarthy will be missed and remembered by so many generations of Holy Name graduates. Her quick wit, contagious laugh and kind heart will never be forgotten.
The wake for Mrs. McCarthy will be held Friday, October 26 from 4 – 8 p.m. at the Fortuna Funeral Home, 7076 Brecksville Road, Independence and from 9 – 10 a.m. Saturday, October 27 at St. Colette Church, 330 West 130th Street, Brunswick. The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Colette.
